Most points come from offense. Why can't it be a set time period in overtime like basketball?

I agree with you that they should implement the college rule. That would also take care of those awful ties, which only happen about every 3-4 years, but really mess up the standings and playoff races.

It's fair because everyone knows what it is going into it, and its the same for every team.

I do prefer college football's OT, but even that has its own problems (whatever team gets the ball 2nd gets preference since they know what they need to get).

It's probably not a set time because it could take too long (i.e. if it were an entire quarter, it would add a lot of time, and the players have more of a chance to be more worn out and have more injuries) and still very likely end up in a tie. Whereas if it were only a few minutes, it would still be feasable that the other team would never get the ball (even though thats the case now).

I guess what I'm trying to say is there is no way to make OT completely even for both teams, since one will get a slight advantage depending on how the coin is tossed, but statistically each team will only be favored half the time.

Also, how oftern does the team score on the first drive in OT? A quick google search would show that it only happens 30% of the time, giving both teams at least one possession 70% of the time. There is still bias, but probably not as much as most would believe. Unfortunatly, there is no OT situation where there would be bias. See http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20041106/mathtrek.asp

I believe that to make it more fair they should implement the college football OT rules, but the set time wouldn't work for any kind of football overtime because football isn't a game where a team scores every couple seconds like in basketball. Sometimes in football a team may not score for over 15 minutes, sometimes both teams don't even score in the first half, a set time limit could end up a tie again.

I think it's a bit sucky that it all depends on a coin toss cuz generally it's gunna be the team on offense that will win, I mean interceptions, fumbles and safetys aren't something that happen on every drive. Although the whole sudden death thing is cool! But I agree that it can really mess up play-offs and such.
I think it would be good if both teams had to start a drive from their 20 yard line and keep going until there's a winner and both teams have had possession an equal number of times (like college).

It's sudden death. I love it.
If your team is good enough then it shouldn't matter who gets the ball first. Make the stop and go down and score.
The college rule is fun to watch, mostly because kickers at that level don't have near the leg strength of the NFL. They have to at least make one first down to have a chance at three points. The NFL is too good with overtime. Makes it more exciting and prevents a lot of ties from happening.

Very fair. Football is about all 3 parts...offense, defense, and special teams....so you lose the toss and the other team marches down the field and scores to win. Then your D stinks and you deserve to lose. I personally hate the college rule. It rewards bad defense. I serious dobut if the NFL will ever change....and that is good.

I think it would be better if they did it something like how college does it.They do the coin toss then whoever wins usually differs and the other team has a chance to score and then the team that won the toss gets the ball.So both teams get a chance to score.

I believe that it is completely fair to every team in the NFL. If you really want to win and your team really does deserve the win then whichever unit is on the field at the time, offense or defense, then they should be able to step up and make the plays to grant them the win.

i like the college rule where both teams get an equal chance of plays to win the game.. none of this coin toss crap to decide who gets to march down the field and kick a field goal without the other team even getting a chance...

let's take it one step further...teams should win by at least 4 points. that would eliminate the last-second field goal. abolish the point after kick. the point after try would all be a 2-point conversion. then for ot, make it a shoot-out, like hockey, using the 2-point conversion
