National Flags are a fairly new idea. The flags that many nations older than ours used were the heraldic banners of their Nobles and monarchs. The symbol of the country was and is in some places still this person (Great Britain for one.) The Head of State in the US is a transient political figure. So we have symbolically embodied the State in our flag.

The national anthems, (also a new idea) of monarchies are often about the king/queen who embody the nation. The SSB is a poem by Francis Scott Key put to the tune of an old English drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven". The poem is about a near thing battle at Ft. McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812 when it did not look good for the new nation. "But that Flag was still there..."

What that flag means to many is very personal and powerful. Even our protests at home and our enemies know its magic and authority as a symbol. That thing has the power to make fairly strong men weep. To give up their ordinary lives and risk themselves where they are called. Its not about political errors, failed foreign or domestic policy, it is about an idea. Ill be buried under it.

I'm sorry your country has a lack of spirit (or perhaps it's just you). That's no excuse to blame us for being proud of our nation. Asking this question is like asking an Englishman why he plays football. He has a reason to: It's fun and competitive for him, and he can find something he likes to do.

Oh for the days when we Brits were proud of our country like the Yanks are today....."Land of Hope and Glory" used to bring tears to my eyes. It's a joke now.
Sing your hearts out America and God Bless You.
