The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Often, it is cheaper too.
Colonial land settlement usually was driven by land speculators who paid the King for large grants of land, which was then surveyed and sold to individuals. However, according to English common law, squatters were entitled to keep the land they were on if no one claimed it for 7 years. This drove people to go past the boundaries of the grants to 'virgin' land, where the only owners were Native Americans, who could be fought (in spite of any treaties to the contrary). The frontier was a lawless place for a long time, and a tempting place for broke people who wanted free land.
The land west of the Appalachians was very good farm land with many large rivers that made the transport of goods easy. It also had millions of acres of excellent timber.

They though there must be more room behind the Appalachians so they moved west and settled.

The land filled up to the east. There was also the start of mass immigrations of Scots Irish, Germans and Highland Scots. 2 out of 3 in the pushy department. The Philadelphia main line certainly want them hanging around, the were kind of foreign after all. So let the Indians deal with them.

The "frontiersmen" went west to explore new lands and find better agriculture conditions, and rivers to trade with, and just to expand the nation with more land which equaled more money back in those days... They pretty much slaughtered every Indian they saw too, which most people forget about
