like the 'e' in taken /ˈteɪkən/ and the /ðə/ (if before a consonant)
like the 'i' in pencil /ˈpɛnsəl/
like the 'o' in eloquent /ˈɛləkwənt/
like the 'u' in circus /ˈsɜ(ɹ)kəs/
like the 'y' in sibyl /ˈsɪbəl/
