The first paved continuous mile of road in the US was on M1 which we now call Woodward Ave, that runs through the center of town. The Renaissance Hotel at 75 stories (73 functional) was the tallest hotel in the world when it was built, it is still the tallest in North America. The city is over 300 years old. It was "discovered" by Cadillac in 1701. Antoine Cadillac.

The University of Detroit/Mercy, a Jesuit college (at one point was attended only by whites) sits smack dab in the middle of the ghetto. When I attended school there, there was a gate surrounding the campus - as if that was going to keep out the bad elements. Southfield was all white and any black person caught there after a certain time at night was locked up. Reminded me much of the south. The Lafayette Towers on Orleans was the home of Diana Ross for a period of time. I lived in the East Tower on Orleans and wouldn't you know - the mayor lived two floors above me on 22nd. Dot and Etta's has the best shrimp in town. I found it unique that in April of one year as I was headed down south for spring break, I returned to knee deep snow - in April....Greektown is the absolute BOMB for good food and fun. All in all - if unique is what you seek - Detroit is the place - I'd never live there again in my life.
