Like for instance; a student is having trouble in Algebra 2 in high school and they are in a regular class. And the school decides to put that student in a resource class which means special education class. When they were in a regular class, they were doing alot of hard work, but when they were put in a resource class all they teach them first grade math, now why is that? Howcome they dont teach like a regular class? Why they do that, because the students are in a resource class doesnt learn anything and they struggle in life. NOW THAT'S ASHAME.

My question to you is: what kind of problems were they having in Algebra 2 class.

I am assuming that if the student was in Algebra 2, they had made it through Algebra 1. If the student is capable of making it through Algebra 1 and the student is now learning "first grade math" the school is doing a huge disservice to this child.

There is a misconception that "special education" means less or easier education. Modification of expectations or easier work is only one intervention. It should not be the first intervention used, as there are other things that can be done to help students. Students should be properly assessed to see exactly what the problem is, and interventions should be tailored to that child's specific needs, with the intention of having that child work at maximum ability, as close to other students as possible.

With the little information you have given, it is impossible to tell you what to do at this point, but if you feel, you or someone you know if not receiving the appropriate education, an IEP team meeting needs to be convened to discuss such. Good luck.

If I could give you points for a best question. . .

This is actually related to my research (in the field of sociology of disability). There are a couple of reasons I can pass along quickly, but this is a complex issue--and in even trying to answer it, I'm opening up a major can of worms.

1) The special education system within most school systems (not aall) are baddly underfunded. they don't have the teachers with the required skills--so the usual pattern is to dump children into such classes to get them out of the way and so they can say they are in compliance with the law.

2) There is still a widespread assumption among educators (to be fair its often not even something they are consciously aware of) that children with special needs are "damaged goods" and their attention needs to be focused on the normal children who can benefit from education.

3) special education is often used as a place to put children who are seen as "problems" whether they have a disability or not. For example, a collegue of mine did a study a few years ago that found one school system was labeling black students as "mentally challenged" or some other disability--and using the special ed classes to immpose a form of segregation. Nor is this an isolated case--its common (that being the main pint of th estudy).

4) I hat to inject politics--and this isn't really, just a documented fact. The current administration has little interest in promoting special education--andeven less in enforcing the law. So the kind of abuses and failures I've talked about--and you worte about--aren't being addressed.

you obviously have never spent time in a special ed room.....
most of these kids have self esteem issues... the idea is to build on what they know... then like a wall use the foundation to improve from... some of these kids need 20 to 50 times of repetition but when they do get it WOW!
and yes after some basic english, and math some programs include life skills.... like balancing a checkbook or shopping or even just getting along with others. IF they students are ready...
ofetn by the time kids are moved to a resource room they are YEARS behind their peers. My moms program gets the kids into JOB SKILL classes for most of the day and with her only for a specific skill or 2... some of them are learning to be excutive chefs.. .or mechanics.... just because they dont have book smarts does not mean they are not smart in other ways... and sadly some kids will never be more than barely functioning.

They are put in that class because they have proven that they can not keep up with the regular curriculum in the algebra class. Some students are happy to be in those classes where they can just be lazy and don't mind being stupid, others are in those classes because they have a genuine learning disability and teaching them something they can't comprehend is pointless, and others get put in there for their laziness in other classes and are embarrassed and work there way out of them. Regardless, it's either due to laziness or disability and teaching them advanced stuff, just more slowly or in a special was just isn't how it's done. You have to start them back at the basics where they can comprehend that and then move on to higher maths, or whatever. If a student is having a genuine problem in algebra its most likely because he missed something along the line and needs to be retaught anyway. Also, what do you want them do, just teach them algebra really slowly, like for three years?

It gets worse if you get put into the special needs class. There's a reason why you'll never hear everything in or out of that class. Isolation and try to forget that there smart but the main problem is socialing because they never had to. Even at a highschool level its kindergarden level.

Thats different between an urban school and a rural school and they probably do it in rural schools also..And the only people to blame are apart of your Federal Government and Local Government..They are so focused on the war budget/homeland security that they pushed the education aside...Hell before this war even started that was all they were talking about..Was how america schools are doing worst than 3rd world countries in test scores..How students were being passed on to grades even when their test scores werent meeting up to standards or they'll hold them back then push them up grades so they wouldn't have to take the test.. Or the students would just dropout cause they weren't learning anything.. Two years ago, When I was in high school I was asking the same thing through out my four years...Hell, I knew something wasn't right when I was elementary school..And my fav teacher was trying to help one of my classmates she told the priniciple he wasn't ready for middle school.. But like other students like him he got passed on..Now he struggled all throughout high school.I dont even remember if he graduated with my class..All I can say to you is worry about yourself like I did get your education and go to college..Then when you get that degree..Worry about it then..Cause they'll hear you but without that degree your just another voice in the wind..

You are right, Special Ed. is just a place to put any child that has a learning disability or challenge and get them out of the main stream of education. Most kids in SE have normal or better than normal intelligence but have dyslexia or ADDHD. There they stifled and it is a shame. Because both conditions can be treated.

Because the point of special education is to teach what you CAN, having realized that teaching what your should is NOT POSSIBLE for these people. Rather than give up and flunk the students, we do what we can for them.
