You know it contracts and other documents, etc. whenever a number is spelled out like "three" it is immediately followed by the digit in parenthesis.

Example: "This provision will take effect three (3) days after it is passed."

What is the purpose of this?

Because of fraud. The (3) could be changed into an (8) So they put the word "three" in front of the number (3)

Because that is how one does things when refering to numbers in documents. From a legal perspective, by putting the digit and the written word for the number, there is no room for mistaking what is meant.

multiple references to numbers are a means to ensure accuracy. If you write a check however and the amount shows $1000, but the written area says one hundred dollars. Only the written amount may be paid as it takes more effort to spell out an amount and adding extra digits is easy fraud.

Clarification. Legal documents are designed to make every possible detail painfully clear, to eliminate any confusion or vagueness. Plus, it draws attention to the number, which is good if there is a short time frame.
