There are dvd-(minus) and dvd+(plus)
dvd- has a different type of recording format to dvd+
Most dvd players can play both.
dvd-r and dvd+r are one record only.
dvd-rw and dvd+rw are re-writable. You can format them and use them like a mini hard drive.

DVD+/-RW drives, as stated by the previous answer, can play DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs as well as CDs. Contrary to the previous answer, however, a DVD drive can't play 'everything'.
DVD drives cannot play hi-definition stuff, like HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
They are compatible to DVDs and Cds, but not Hi-Def DVDs.

then theres CD-RW=CD rewrittable
then theres for DVDs
theres DVD-R= the worst visual i do not recammend it

They are an optical drive that will read and write CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, VCDs, SVCDs. They would be my first choice for a optical drive in my computer, because they are so versatile.

They are drives that can read both CD and DVD's and can burn both CD's and DVD's.
They can do everything.
