Having an enema isn't painful, but it is somewhat uncomfortable. The best thing that you can do is to relax. The tighter your muscles are, the more uncomfortable it will be. You'll probably be laying on your side. The nurse will insert the tip of the enema into your rectum. Its not very big and doesn't go in very far, and most usually come lubricated so that it slides in easily. You can cover up with a blanket but the door will be closed for your privacy. The nurse will squeeze the bottle and gently push the saline solution inside you. You'll hold it in as long as you possibly can, and then you'll go.
Another thing about staying relaxed -- if your muscles are tight, you won't be able to hold the solution in as long and there may be stool left over inside you ... so they may have to do it again. Don't stress over it, the hard part will be over in less than 5 minutes.

It depends what kind of enema your having. If it's just to help you have a BM; then you will have relief about 5-10 minutes after its administered. If you are getting a contrast for pictures of your intestines, you may cramp for a little while, but it will subside. The most uncomfortable thing will be the insertion; which only lasts a few seconds. Just relax (don't tense up).

A barium enema? Or a normal one?
There are many different kinds of enemas...some are detergents, they cause the bowel to spasm...and draw water into the bowel to flush out the excrement. Irritant enemas are soap suds...there are fleet enemas...
You will be laying on your left side, and draped, with only your buttocks exposed. A small bottle, usually around 200cc of solution will be pushed into your bowel through a small tube approximately 4-5 inches long. Once the liquid is in, the tube is drawn out. You hold the liquid as long as you can, then expell it, along with the fecal matter it was used to remove.
It really isnt that bad. It can be crampy, and can burn. Once it's over, you will feel better--most likely!
Hope it helps!

It won't hurt, you'll be squirting a liquid up your butt so it might feel a little weird or uncomfortable at first but it's really no big deal. Don't be nervous, thousands of people do it everyday with no pain or true discomfort at all. Normally you lie on your side in a somewhat fetal position. You don't need to be covered up, but most likely you will be.

you lay on your side with your butt at the edge of the bed, they run a small water tube in there and fill u with water. It doesn't hurt it's just a very strange uncomfortable feeling but it does not hurt in a painful way. Everything is covered but your butt. I had one when I had my child, the doctor made me and I was sceared too until it happened, it,s nothing to worry about. Don't be nervous!!!

Positioned probably on your side with one leg up, they lubricate it so it won't hurt, but honestly for a minute it will. But during that TIME think of how much better you'll feel, and as it's working think
of all the Bad Toxins that are coming out of you! Yes, you'll be covered, not to fear.
Best of luck,

probably on your side but you could also be on your back. Yes, you'll be covered. No, is not painful just a bit unconfortable because you are urged to keep the fluid in as long as possible.

unless you have had one they are hard to describe. yea you should be covered up...i can think of one example to calrify the pain though. wait till the january tax and spend proposals come out from the liberals. you know where thats aimed and it will give you a good and accurate preview of how it would feel. not exactly the same but just as acute and in the same area with the same effect..cleaning you out. good luck.
