Okay, so they've brought the minimum wage up to $7.25. They've brought it up to $7.25 in every US state and territory EXCEPT American Samoa. WTF?!??!?!? This is such hipocrisy. They're no different than the Republicans now and I'm afraid that Americans aren't getting what they voted for.

According to Democrats, Samoa's economy can't handle the increase, even though most of their workforce is employed with multi-billion dollar companies like Del Monte and Starkist who can more than afford to pay their workers $7.25 who are actually getting $3.60 an hour.

What are they thinking? Are they thinking?

PS. I'm not a Republican. I dislike Republicans just as much. I just don't think that the Democrats are doing as they promised right about now and yet again the American people aren't getting what they voted for.

Wow, it's amazing how some of the primarily liberal answerers are yelling "Wage increases in poor lands are a bad idea" when 4 months ago it was the other way around.

Don't anyone get me wrong. I lean left as well on many issues, but the party politics and loyalty that some "liberals" are showing towards the Democrats is just distrurbing.

First, the House passed the minimum wage hike, it has not passed the Senate or the Presidents desk.
Second, it only raised it to $5.85 the first year, $6.55 the second year, and $7.25 the third year.
Third, the increase equals out to be $1456 a year per employee. When you figure in the increase for the employers part of SS, and the increase in workers compensation, that is based on wages, it will figure around $1700 per employee increase for the employer.

Ten emplyees would be an increase of $17,000, 25 employees would be an increase of $42,500. Do you honestly think the employer is going to eat this loss, or pass the cost onto customers in the form of price increases? This is going to happen for the next three years. Sounded good unless you already made more than the minimum wage hikes, then your dollar will buy less!

Although I disagree with the federal minimum wage increase for various reasons, our economy is strong enough at this time to endure any downfalls it may produce.
The biggest problem I have with this legislation is that the democrats are using their newfound power in congress to only make the appearance that they are making any true social policy changes. If they want to REALLY help ALL Americans, they will work on issues like reducing the deficit, social security reform, and illegal immigration policy. These issues are obviously more difficult to tackle and there is much less political gain for them to do so.

More of the same business as usual, just smoke and mirrors.

I bet they quietly vote themselves a fat payraise before our seniors have prescription drug price relief.

Because paying someone $7.25 an hour in Samoa WOULD MAKE NO SENSE!!!!

Why don't you think through your plan with some facts, and what would actually happen if the minimum wage was raised to $7.25 in Samoa :

The "rich" multi national corporations would pay the $7.25 an hour for the shortest time period possible, and move their operations somewhere else in the Asian pacific.

But you "care more", your "compassionate" but the US congress is cold hearted and cruel.

Someone has to take care of jobs and the economy. Thank goodness its not you!

The best time to raise the minimum wage is when the following occur:

1) It is significantly lower than the prevailing wage for unskilled workers
2) Unemployment is relatively low
3) You have a reason to believe that exploitation, not simple supply and demand is the reason that some people are getting paid so much lower than the prevailing wage in their area

Samoa doesn't fit these conditions.

LOL, you say your not a republican and you bash democrats and liberals? You're a bad liar.

Has the legal minium wage gone up for everyone?? We are not even talking Samoa!! Did you know that a waiter/waitress minium wage is only 2.15 cents!! Even after President Bush change the title and but in under manufactering!! So because you see the 7.25 cents don't think that every American is making that much an hour.

Democrats, replublicans? Is there a difference? I think not , these are politicians that are determined to keep the strain of power and control in effect. We need to think out of the box ,get away from our sheep mentality and realize and research. Change our democrate replublican thinking and go for issues. I go independant , one party that is not supported by corperations.
