You know clothes can shrink obviously and be much smaller than before, a couple of times I've washed t-shirts and while not shrunk a lot they feel frustratingly shorter. Do they shrink just a wee bit and how is the best way to avoid this?

Yes, many do, especially if they contain cotton. Try washing your clothes at a temp no higher than 40 degrees. Also only tumble dry underwear!, I leave all my shirts to dry on the line. I also reshape and stretch tee shirts (pulling them longways) before leaving them to dry.

Depends what they are made of. Synthetics such as nylon do not shrink. Cotton can shrink and wool probably shrinks the most. Best way is to follow the instructions on the label.
Water temperature can be critical.
Remember also that a tumble dryer uses heat and therefore can also shrink clothes.
The label is your best guide, but if in doubt use a lower temperature.

Sometimes they do... especially cotton. If they are pre-shrunk, or if they have been washed before, they shouldn't shrink again, but some delicate materials do. This is usually temporary, and once you wear them a while, they stretch out. If you are still having problems, however, don't put them in the drier, just hang dry or lay flat.

Make sure you wash them at the temperature indicated on the garments wash label. If the water is too hot then the material reacts by shrinking and/or fading.

Wash in warm or cold water and dry on medium heat. You may have to hang them instead of drying them in the dryer! Been There Done that with hubby`s t shirt in the length shrinking so I couldn`t dry them in the dryer..

Yea they shrink. But the dryer is much worse. If you don't want your clothes to shrink its better to hang over the tub or on the line outside.

the best way to avoid that is when you dry the clothes, put it on the medium heat setting instead of hot.

also, washing clothes in hot water will make them shrink too. its the heat that does it.
