And then the remainder of your responses are answers to the participant's response that answered your question with a question? Nobody even seems to pay attention to the original question that you asked. I'm asking because I saw a somewhat similar situation occur. I know it is against community guidelines to answer a question with a question and was surprized that no one had it deleted/removed. Has this happened to you? Have you seen this before? I did, however, find it rather interesting and thought provoking.

Edit: Crafyjem719: I believe you understood the question I asked. By answering my question, "Has anyone ever asked a question only to have another participant answer with another question?" and answering with the question, "What does this question mean"? Other participants' would respond to your answer as opposed to mine. Good response.

Bernie and Smackit - I think you both missed the point of my question and you neither answered my question nor did you give an analogy.

's - great answer. Thumbs up. Exactly what I was talking about. I asked a specific question. Your answer had absolutely nothing to do with the subject. I'm surprised I don't have a bunch of people talking about how to remedy hair balls. This is exactly my point. Has anyone ever asked a question only to have another participant answer with something completely off the subject and then have others start talking about something else?

Douglas - Answering a question with a question is indeed a violation of community guidelines. I see it all of the time. I'm surprised it is allowed. That is one of the reasons I asked this question. In my verbiage, I even mentioned that.

Octacat. Well, this question will most likely be deleted for chatting or what have you. You don't accept emails. I'm 41, and love philosophy. I have my masters degree and you are welcome to email me. I agree there's nothing wrong with answering a question with a question, however, in this particular forum, it is against community guidelines. No offence intended. As I indicated in my original question, I found it interesting and thought provoking.

Dazed and Confused: I would have to go back and check my answers... I do try to be careful.. I don't want to be "reported." But, I'm sure at some point in time I have, indeed, answered a question with a question. Of course, now, I try to answer the question and then, perhaps ask a question after I've answered. I don't know - Is that a violation?

There's nothing against answering a question with a question, that's called philosophy, has been for over 3000 years. I've had my answers removed because of that theory too; some questions are meant to be thought provoking, which in my opinion are awesome- makes me think. I challenge and welcome those that have the courage to question with a question.
added info: Thumbs down bot can kiss 3000 years of history? WOW- how old are you and how much have you read?? Don't insult my intelligence. Did you even bother to read my answer?
added info: I do have a 360. *wink*

Sometimes it seems people think YA is a life and death situation. Reporting people just because you don't like their answer, or you disagree with them. It's like little kids playing "tattle tell".
I have at times answered a question with a question because the asker's question was so asinine, you couldn't answer it with an answer.

Yes. I see that all the time. Because I do it all the time. Sometimes people ask dumb questions. Do they really expect you to answer them? (See? Heheh, Oh! Again)
And you're basically asking the same thing over and over again
My answer; YES.

You mean like when people really want to help you but your question is not detailed enough for them to fully answer and they ask for clarification?

Like, what would you consider as a question. Does it have to have a question mark at the end.

Yes, its rather annoying, but i do it sometimes in response to completely ridiculous questions like "Can i leave now?". My response to that will be "Well, i don't know, can you? :)"
LOL
