My son is 9 months old and weighs 15 lbs. The doctor told me to put him on formula to gain weight, but I've tried formula on him before and he won't take it. I've switched brands and I'm currently trying this other brand and he still won't take it. I wondered if my breastmilk could be mixed with the formula until he gets used to the formula. The doctor said that if my son doesn't gain a significant amount of weight within the next month, he will have to go to the hospital. Please help. Thank you.

YES FOR SURE!!I have been adding powder to my breast milk since my son was born. This was due to a heart defect. The doctors at Childrens Hospital in Vancouver b.c. had me put 1 teaspoon of powdered formula in with 100mls of breast milk. You dont have to boil water and actually make formula and mix it,just add powder.Be sure you use it within 24 hours and keep it in the fridge, and not like straight breast milk it is only good for about an hour max 2 hours, then the good stuff begins to break down.I would still double check with your doctor but this is a good way, they dont get a real bad taste. My son is almost 5 months and only 13 and half pounds.I dont think it will matter what kind of formula you use,i started with lactose free in the hospital but turned out my son was totally allergic to all dairy so i switched to Nutramegin.Good luck and i hope this will help youl

Yes. I mixed it for a different reason. I was not making enough milk but wanted my son to get what he could because it is so good for him. Also my son is only 3months and weighs 14lbs so I have recently started to put the tiniest amount of cereal in his bottle because he is so big he is needs a lil' more to keep him full for longer periods of time. My pediatrician recommends cereal no later than 4 months. Maybe you should discuss that with his doctor too. Hope this helps!

I don't know the particulars of your health history, or your sons health history, so don't get me wrong, I'm not making judgements. But it confuses me that your doctor wants you to put your baby on formula to help him gain weight. Usually breast milk is the best thing for a baby. You CAN mix formula and breast milk, I had to do it when my milk started to dry up with my son due to stress. :(

I would try contacting the people at http://www.lalecheleague.org/
They might have more information on this subject.

Yes you can do it just mix it gradually and hopefully he'll start to gain the weight if he wont take it that way you might have to switch entirely to formula but both of them being mixed provides lots of nutrients and is really healthy for the baby it will make him fuller for longer as well also. good luck hope your lil guy gains weight

Absolutely you can mix them together. However...please be careful with refrigeration. While pure breastmilk can go back into the refrigerator (assuming it hasn't been out TOO long) the formula/breastmilk mixture must be thrown away if not consumed right away.

As long as you mix the formula with water separately then combined it with the breast milk. Hopefully your son will be able to taste enough of the breast milk to start drinking that mixture. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.

Yes it can it's actually good because you are mixing all the good nutrients and stuff with the formula so it's even more healthier for the lil one.

Yes, start mixing it light, then just increase it everyday. Soon he will be adjusted to the taste. I did the same thing with my daughter and had no problems. be careful though, the formula will constipate him at first and or make him gassy.

I wouldn't put them in the same bottles...... Maybe seperately. He/she can get used to both.... I would just give him both in seperate bottles... And feed him often!!! If he's 9 months old now, he also should be eating cereal !!! Like two-three months old he should have been eating cereal..... Whoah, he hasn't even had cereal , yet!!! How sad is that!! Your baby may very well be malnurished!! And that's not a good thing, it will definately end up going to the child protective services, should they hear abou it!!!
