The original one, circa end of the17th century, had 8 finger holes plus 2 keys for extra notes. In 1812 Mueller came up with one that had only 7, but 13 keys.
In 1839 Klose came up with a different system (the Boehm) that has pretty much become the standard. I am sorry here, I cannot seem to find out how many were on this new system..............

I'm not the first with the right answer but I do offer a great website where the keys are numbered. There are 22 keys. This site also has a terrific fingering listing which includes higher and lower notes than most charts.

um 23. I think i don't have my clarinet with me but that's counting all the keys where your fingers can be placed and that's only if you are playing on a standard Bb clarinet.

there is a few confusion between solutions. sure, clarinet is a Bb device and flute is a C device. The question is that, if the Bb device is taking section in music written in F, would the flute section be written in Eb (which may also be Eb live performance). As others have replied, sure, so all notes will be written a step down. the basically different problem to operate to the unique question is to be particular to position in writing out the notes as residences in keys like Eb--notes not flat interior the signature, of route--truly than setting up sharps, as having a mixture of sharps and residences can confuse human beings (basically as you would write out sharps truly than residences in F#).
