NO STAY AWAY FROM DELL ITS PRODUCTS ARE A RIP OFF!!!! Dell is so Cheap because they use VERY CRAPPY And Inferior Parts in their computers. I have been working on computers for many years. I tell all of my customers to never buy a "Dell". I tell them if they are going to go with a chain brand then to go with a Gateway. Or if they have the money, I feel the best PC for there money is either a FUJITSU or a Alienware computer. Dell will sell you a computer that has terrible realibity, And they know it. They do not care about what they sell you once you have paid them for your unit. I got a Dell desktop in October 2 of 2006. The PC was DEAD on arrival do to bad harddrive. I called dell 23 times before I finally got them to send me a NEW Harddrive which didn't even get here until Jan. 10 2007 Which was just a few days ago. I ordered a friend a Dell laptop he wanted for Christmas for his daughter. She has had it just since Christmas and it already has problems seeing the RAM in the laptop. I am boxing both units and sending back to DELL. I refuse to even work on a Dell computer after all of this mess with "Them". If you want something that can serve you well for years to come buy a GATEWAY or a Alienware Machine. Also I looked around the net and found tons of people having lots of problems with there Dell's also. Dell used to make a great PC until about 3 years ago when they started using the LOW GRADE PARTS they buy from China. Hope this will help you. I use a Fujitsu Laptop and love it. It has a superfast multitasking processor. It came with tons of ram "2 gigs Stock" and wireless capability's they blow any other laptop I have ever seen out of the water. Well WORTH looking into.

Actually, Dell _isn't_ cheap. You can get a better PC or laptop, with better specs, for much better prices than Dell will quote you. The amazing prices that Dell quotes are usually for cripped machines that often need an upgrades in order to reach their potential. (memory, better video cards, etc.)
Another problem with buying from Dell is that you seldom know who manufacturers the individual parts in their machines. What kind of hard drive is it? What kind of memory, and what's the memory speed? Is it really enough memory to run your system properly? Do you know if it's a 6 bit or 8 bit monitor? How large is the power supply?
I built my last laptop on an ASUS "bare bones". It's more powerful than my desktop, actually, and can play any game out there (and probably any game that will come out in the next couple years). A comparable laptop from Dell would have been at least $2000. Probably more. My build was approx $1100. PC manfacturers that do these "great deal" pre-built systems, are usually cutting corners by giving you parts that are nowhere near cutting edge.
That said... one has to have some expertise to either find a PC manufacturer who builds solid machines for decent prices, or to build their own computer. You have to shop around and nothing is more important than Research, when it comes to choosing the model of the computer you want. If you're shopping for a notebook, checkout notebookforums.com or notebookreview.com. Go into the Forums and talk with other laptop enthusiasts. If you're looking for a desktop, find a similar site... Read reviews on Cnet.com, epinions, etc.

They can be so cheap because they mass produce computers using budget parts. Toshiba costs more because they use quality parts, well most parts. And alienware shouldn't be compared with either. Before Dell bought it, yes, dell bought alienware, the computers were built for custom needs using top notch computer components usually used for gaming.
I'd recommend a laptop from alienware, which are still top notch even with the merger, only if you are going to be playing high resource consuming games or can afford it. Toshiba should be bought if you are going to be using it for decents games, and multimedia purposes because they are one of the few companies who have a decent audio package. Dell laptops, i'd recommend from the latitude series. the parts are easier to come by if you happen to have a problem. working for an IT place, we've seen many problems more frequently with Dell's XPS laptops. the inspiron series are more low end econo laptops. I received one in college and still have it, but i replaced every single thing in it.

Dell is cheap for two main reasons:
Direct model applied ( there are no third parties, no warehouses of pre-manufactured computers, large supply from the partners)
What makes Dell special is the customer and warranty services Dell offers to the customers.
I have two systems ( a desktop Dimension 5100 and Inspiron E1501) and they are great.

In addition to what was said above (Dell's marketshare, size, partners, etc), Dell owns Alienware.
Alienware tends to do additional tweaks to increase the preformance, cooling/airflow, sell better parts, and not to mention things like the cool case itself. Sort of like how Chevrolet charges more for their Corvette.

Dell is strugling to capture market share, and has been playing the price war game in order to do it relative to HP, the current market leader.
Realize that Dell's main portable market is the "basic business" laptop, while Alien and Toshiba (to a lesser degree) are going after the gaming and multimedia markets to a greater degree than Dell.
Best to you.

The reason why there so cheap is like asking why wall mart prices are so low. They make companies sell them their supplies at a discount rate making the computer cheaper and if the company dosent lower there price they most likely threaten to go to another company.
