1. 2 to the 6th power = 64.

2. Looks like a net gain of 5 inches ever hour so 7 hours.

1) 2 to the 6th power

2) The worm must go up 36 inches and goes up 5 inches per hour for the first 6 hours for a total of 30. On the 7th hour, it crawls up the rest of the 6 inches.

there fore, it is 6 hours and 12 minutes i think

1) 2^6=64

2) The worm must go up 36 inches and goes up 5 inches per hour for the first 6 hours for a total of 30. On the 7th hour, it crawls up the rest of the 6 inches.

>>So it takes 6 6/7 of an hour if you must do fractions.

Others have already done 1.

2. A trap here is to say that it makes a nett gain of 5 inches every hour, and so divide 36 inches by 5. However, the last time it doesn't slip back because it's reached the top. So, find how long it takes to get to within 7 inches of the top, and then add 1 hour for the final 7 ins.

Do you want us to help you, or just to do it for you? (sorry, but thats cheating. the point is not to answer the question, but to learn problem solving skills) I'm guessing that some smarty-pants have already done the latter. lawl.

that said, here are a few hints anyway:

1) try dividing by two a few times.

2) what is the TOTAL distance the worm travels in an hour?
how many inches in one foot?
how many TOTAL inches does the worm have to travel?
(note: Hy is correct, thats a nasty one, I didnt notice that at first, do what he said.)

Sorry if I seem a little impatient. Good luck. And next time maybe mention that you dont just want the answers, you want to know HOW to do them,(if that makes any sense.)

2^6 = 64
5 inches per hour for 6 hours = 30, one more hour adds 7 inches, and its out of the hole.
