Not all of them do. Mostly small animals,if
they see that they can not provide enouth milk
for all their young, they will eat some of their
babies. Larger animals such as cows will
abandon their young for the same reason.
{such as a cow having twins} Sounds awful
does'nt?

All animals will kill and/or eat their young from time to time. Often the male will kill the young to send the female back into heat, so he can mate again. This is particularly true of rabbits. Rarely though do Hamsters eat their young. They DO however, hide them in the cheeks sometimes if they sense danger. Have you witnessed this behavior or are you just curious? If a hamster IS killing/eating her young it means something was wrong with them to begin with (Illness).

Many animals will eat their young, including dogs and cats. It's instinct, leftover from their wild ancestors. If they sense that the babies are not healthy, they kill them (natural selection... why waste resources on a dying young when it could be used on the strong ones). Then, since they dont' want them to decay in the nest or den, they eat them. Animals don't have garbage pickup, and rotting flesh draws in predators....eating it is the only way to get rid of it and keep the rest of the litter and themselves safe.
