This person is obviously looking for attention. If you are listening, giving advice, or responding in any way, then you are an easy target. You become the main sounding board, the person they go to when they want to brag about themselves. I had a friend like that, everytime I tried to tell her my problems, she would cut me off and say, do you mind, we are talking about me (thank God she moved away. What I wished I told her was that "you are boring me, either change the topic or I'm moving on". What also helps is to act bored or just respond with the wrong answers. They will get the hint that they don't have your full attention.

I tend to go through the same series on these type of people:
1. Tolerate.
2. Start ignoring when I can't tolerate anymore.
3. It all builds until I finally snap and tell them to leave me alone.
Just ask them not to bother you nicely.

I would stay far away from him or her. If it were someone that I could not get away from (parent, child, spouse, sibling) I would stop talking to the person, and possibly let them know why.
