Yes. Isn't that the whole point of an avatar, to show people an idea of how you look or where you live, instead of putting your *actual* picture up?I think it does.

I believe that the choice of avatar can have to do with one's personality than their appearance. That being said, certain types of personalities are more likely to use their avatar to portray their appearance. However, yahoo's avatar's are pretty limited in terms of age and appearance, so any similarities to looks are likely to be only hints. I believe every picture one uses to portray themselves hints to their personality and even a lack of picture may indicate a type of personality.
P.S. I've now updated my avatar because of your question.

Doesn't yours?
I was under the impression that this was the point. Most certainly my avatar looks as much like me as a cartoon image can. Hard to say about my personality, except that I enjoy choosing backgrounds & such that I would enjoy being in.

Yes. Or what I have found most common, is the avatar is a mirror of what the person wishes they ccould be like. How they wish they could dress and the way they wished they looked.

I agree with sarah. when people cant see the real you and you are making a picture for them with random parts, I think you make yourself look like you wish you could in an attempt for people to love the "real" (the one that you see in your head and would be if you had enough money and were the right shape etc.)you instead of the one (the you that you really are)that everybody judges you by.

I think mine gives insight to who I am. I am frowning and my hair is dark, although a dark purple would be more accurate. I think it hints that I tend to look gothic in appearance even if it doesn't show my tattoos and piercings...

Not necessarily, I change mine every now and then. I always come back to what looks like me or my interests, but I do get creative at times. Besides, you can't judge a person just by their looks.

Most of the time, yes.
You pick what you like. So, we get an idea of the person's preferences.
