My grandfather is pretty old and about to pass on. His name is Andrew Smith and we have the same last name ofcourse. I wanted to name a son Andrew, but that is my wifes first deadbeat husbands name and she's dead set against it. So I was thinking about using my grandfathers middle name Smith as a first name. What do you think?

Too complicated. Since Smith is usually a last name, your son will have a hard time growing up with it as a first name. He might eventually introduce himself by his middle name in order to avoid the comments. In which case, it wouldn't honor your grandfather. Have you tried asking your grandfather what names he likes? Letting him choose a name you and your wife can agree on is another way of honoring him.

How about giving him the same initials as your grandfather? Maybe try Austin Shawn or Austin Samuel. Or Smith. But I'm personally not that into Smith. If you have a daughter, I suggest Andrea.

Sorry about your grandfather, but good luck with your son.

You say smith for the first name? But Smith is your last name. I am confused sorry. As for you wife I would think you would understand her point. How about instead of Andrew you name him Drew. Or just Andy. Good luck

As long as your last name isn't smith that would be great as a first name.

I think it's great. It's strong and classic, but not in an overused John or Matt type of way. It was also my grandfather's middle name and I'm considering it as well.

I think that is a lovely name for a boy, and taken from your grandfather's middle name, that is so precious. I like it very much.

Be prepared for someone to nickname him "Smitty", why not use Smith as a middle name?
