As stated above, healthy pets (namely dogs and cats) are not found in pet stores. Pet stores tend to have puppies from puppy mills, which are grossly inbred and exhibit a myriad of health problems. I won't even buy dog food in a store that sells puppies or kittens.
As far as fish go, the Petsmart in my area actually has fairly knowledgeable sales staff and their fish are for the most part healthy. I like Petco's selection of dog food (they carry the premuim brands like Solid Gold) but you couldn't give me a fish from them. I would never buy a living creature from Walmart, but they have cheap supplies.

I really really hope you are considering adopting. Pets from breeders will definitely find a home, and even if they don't they will never be put down for lack of room, but some of the sweetest animals you'll ever find are stuck in a cage in a shelter on a list to get euthanized right now. Dogs from pet stores are usually from puppy mills, and the same goes for cats, which usually come from kitten mills. Puppy and kitten mills are just about the worst things in the animal world... DON'T get a pet from a pet store unless you're sure the purchase won't be supporting a mill. But seriously, adopting is much much much much better. You get a companion, best friend, and adorable fur-ball, and you save the kitty's life. It's a much better option. :)

A reliable breeder would NEVER sell their animals to a pet store.
If you are just getting fish, go to one of those stinky little petshops. No big stores, especially not Wal Mart, their fish all have ICH(sp?) Otherwise check your local newspapers for a breeder if you are buying a mammal or a reptile.
Supplies are made by different companies. Different stores will often carry the same supplies so where you are buying doesn't matter so much as what you are buying.

The healthiest pets are not found at stores. You will have much better luck with private breeders.

You should never ever buy pets from a petstore. The pets are bred inhumanely and be ripe with all kinds of diseases, infections, and other problems. Go to a breeder or rescue.
