chiclids would kill your barbs.

I would suggest maybe
one dwarf gourami
or 1 male platy, three female platys
or 1 rainbow/red tailed shark

don't get anything too small like glowlight or neon tetras, the barbs will pick on them

if you want a catfish, i suggest a clown pleco (unlike most plecos, it wont outgrow a 20 gallon)

Tiger barbs are boisterous mid- to bottom-dwellers and 6 of them is a nice-sized school; don't let the school get smaller than that or you might run into aggression problems.

I don't think either cichlids or catfish would be a good choice. Cichlids are too aggressive and most catfish would probably feel overwhelmed with such active tankmates sharing their bottom space in such a small tank.

I'd recommend danios. Zebras are small enough that you can add 5 your tank, fast enough not to become targets for the barbs, and they prefer the top level of the tank, which suits the barbs perfectly. Plus, they're very hardy and attractive little fish. :)

Good luck with your choice!

Any of the Cory Catfish might be good.
You really only want 1 gallon of water for every inch of fish for tropicals. 6 Tiger barbs + 4 inches each would need about 24 gallons.
Since the Tiger barbs swim in the middle to top section of the tank you could get a catfish that would grow up to 6 inches, the Cory's grow to 3" otherwise the African Feathfin grows 6". Those are my favorites.

You don't want to overcrowd your tank otherwise there can be many negative effects.

You could add a couple of corydoras - you need catfish to clean the bottom and none of the other fish will bother them. Whatever other fish you get, you need to make sure you don't get anything with long, flowing fins (no angels, no guppies, no betas) because the tiger barbs are pretty aggressive.

A good suggestion might be a school of fast moving fish - any of the smaller tetras, danios, perhaps a pair of thick-lipped gouramis. The majority of cichlids are too aggressive to be kept in a community tank - but if you find something you like, research their adaptability to a community tank.

I think that tiger barbs should be left alone without other fish because if you have tiger barbs, they can get too big for the tank and lose a lot of space....my opinion

You could add any of the smaller cory cats, such as the albino, or pygmy cory cats.

Also you could add zebra danios, or even a pair of gouramis.

Fortunately with 6 tiger barbs in your tank they should spread their aggression amongst themselves and leave the rest of your fish alone.

Your tank is probably too full to put cichlids in. I kept a tiger barb with four cichlids and he did fine. I keep him with gouramis and he they get along fine. Any kind of catfish would work. I like sun catfish and corydoras.

you can put some smaller cichlids in with them but i would not recomend africans because they are extreemly agressive. a firemouth might be perfect however tiger barbs are fin nippers so be prepared for torn up tails and fins at times

Anything really, that is the same size or larger than your barbs.
