If I pay someone by cheque, would the date on my bank statement indicate the date it was paid in, or the date it was cleared?

It is usually the date on which the money is debited from your account; this is, however, not necessarily the date the cheque clears - the payee may have to wait a day or so more after the money is taken from your account to have access to the funds.

The date it was cleared, but then again the banks are a law to themselves, so the most likely true answer is when they feel like it.
