• U.S. presidents are elected to four-year terms by 538 Electoral College voters, one per senator and representative from each state, plus three from the District of Columbia. In 38 states, the voters are required by law to vote for the candidate who won the popular voter in their state, although all electors usually cast a ballot for the popular vote winner. A candidate must receive a majority of 270 votes to win the election.

Each state has 1 electoral vote for each member of Congress. Since every state has 2 Senators and at least one Representative, the minimum number is 3. Connecticut (for example) has 5 Representatives and 2 Senators, so it has 7 electoral votes.

Since there are 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 Senators, there are 535 electoral votes available. To win, a candidate must win over 50%, or 268 votes. The number of Representatives is intentionally kept at an odd number to prevent ties.

(Note: There is a proposal before Congress to add 1 seat in the House of Representatives for the District of Columbia, and 1 more seat probably going to Utah. If this happens there will be 537 electoral votes with 269 needed to win.)

The number of electoral votes depends on a states population. The higher a states population is, the more electoral votes that state has. California has the highest number of electoral votes, with 57. 270 electoral votes are needed to be elected (not select) president.

It depends on the state's population. For example, a state that's small in population like Maine might have only 5 electoral votes while a large state like Texas might have as high as 40 electoral votes.

Seven states and the District of Columbia have 3 electoral college votes each. And the number of votes for each state goes up and up to the point at which, currently, California has 55 votes.
