For awhile there's been this virus in my computer. I've removed it but the computer is still messed up because of it. But today I got a phone call that there was suspicious activity on a credit card, and then an e-mail from pay pal that said someone was trying to hack into it and that it was shut down. Could they all be tied together?

the Paypal email was probably a scam; lot of those about. So that is not tied into anything.
There ARE some viruses that can mail personal details to other people, but that is quite rare. There are programs that can read every key you hit, and send the results to another person, again, quite rare.
What I'm trying to say is that while the virus thing could be tied to the credit card stuff it is not that likely. And credit card security is pretty bad by itself.
My suggestions:
- follow up on that phone call and get all the facts
- back up your personal data on CD or external HD
- format your computer and reinstall windows
Reason I suggest format and reinstall is that even after a virus is cleaned there is always the chance that it installed some other nasty program or is still hiding somewhere. And you say it is messed up so a good time to reinstall.
Good luck!

FROM THE PAYPAL WEBSITE:
Questions PayPal will never ask you in an email:
To help you better identify fake emails, we follow strict rules. We will never ask for the following personal information in email:
* Credit and debit card numbers
* Bank account numbers
* Driver's license numbers
* Email addresses
* Passwords
* Your full name

Run an anti virus checker called "Spy bot" and it will remove all the "common viruses". You can run a search for google for it and it is 100% free. Then you will need to go into your programs from the control panel, and make sure there is not anything on there that is not supposed to be. Delete cookies and restart your computer and you should be able to get to it. I have been on ebay all day and haven't any issues. Let us know if you are able to get back on, if not I can walk you through it step by step.

It disabled windows Firewall and about 10 services.I had no Idea that a virus could do all of this. I ran Spyware Doctor and put him/her in Quarantine. It want delete I tried and cough it again . The incoming EM was scanned by AVG but not picked up.So i am not opening any EMs that i don't recognize.PC running great now. NO MORE FREE WARE PROGRAMS FOR ME.

Of course these things could all be linked... Several questions:
1. Is this computer used to surf porn?
2. Even if you don't surf porn, could another user be doing so?
3. What internet security suite are you using for your computer?
4. Have you scanned for viruses as well as trojans and auto dialers?
5. What operating system do you use?
6. Do you leave your computer on and connected to the internet while you are not using it.
7. What kind of computer do you have?
8. What do you use to surf... Internet Explorer, Mozilla ...??
email me the answers ad dukeblue1991@yahoo.com and I can give you some direction.

Yes they could all be tied to spy ware. Better change your passwords, get new account numbers, and have your PC rebuilt or restored to original software.
Even if you're able to remove the virus / spy ware, there's no telling what it changed on your PC or if it's still letting someone else see your personal information.

Maybe you didn't completely remove the virus? you probably still have it since your computer is still messed up..something like this happened to me once and I went to the lavasoft forums, they helped me get rid of it, and I've had no problems since.
