You are there to learn and not fool around w/your phones. Phones are for after school.
Is it ok for adults to take personal cell calls while at work. Or should they be at work to work and earn money instead of socializing on the phone?
Think about your answer and you may have an answer to your own question.

Yes. Many people, school administrators included, operate on the premise that young people are immature, irrational decision makers. They assume that students, given the right to use cell phones during school, would not learn anything and cause disruptions. This does of course happen sometimes. The reality is that people make their own choices. Students who want to learn will focus on learning. Students who do not want to learn can certainly find other ways to evade education and cause disruption. Cell phones only cause mild disruptions at best. At the University level students unbelievably can use cell phones and learn,... this is possible(multi-tasking?). Secondly, there is an occasional instance where people might use a cell phone for important reasons. This is not to say that I recommend regularly using a cell phone during class, and courtesy certainly should dictate not to hold conversions while in a classroom setting. Phones obviously can't be used during tests. What is the harm with using phones during breaks though?

Why go to school then?
School is for education.
Plus, there is a whole lot more than text messages going on with cell phones. I have seen answer sharing on cell phones.
NO, cell phones should not be used at school.

Absolutely not. I have raised 3 daughters and am now raising 2 of my grandchildren. In the meantime I have had lots of teenagers coming and going from my home. I know that if you could use your cell phones in school nothing that is being taught in the class room would be absorbed.

Yes, you should BE ABLE TO, but you shouldn't BE ALLOWED TO.
Cheers.
P.S. I think that, when your teacher was explaining the difference between "be able to" and "be allowed to", you were texting a message on your cell phone...

No. there is enough socializing without bringing in cell phones. Talking to your friends is awesome, but school is for learning and getting a good start on life.

No, you are there to learn. Maybe if you kids would get your heads out of the damn cell phones for a minute you would actually learn something in school and the US wouldn't be known as a country full of spoiled, uneducated brats.

NO! My son and his girlfriend kept texting (cingular) and they rendered the phone turned off indefinitely because the parents do not feel it's their duty to pay for the excessive texting and the son refuses to shell out for it and the girlfriend or her parents arent about to help out. SO NO.

Wouldn't texting defeat the purpose of even going to the classroom to listen to a teacher if all your going to do is text.
