If the definition of a capital city is 'the seat of government or monarchy', why then is the capital of the Netherlands Amsterdam when the government and monarchy both sit in Den Haag?

The Netherlands are an independent country, with its own laws and definitions and logistics for the country. It has no reason to follow definitions that were created in other countries.

In our constitution, Amsterdam is the capital city of The Netherlands. And it is regarded as such by all citizens of the Netherlands.

Also, the offical Royal Palace is in Amsterdam.

Indeed the government seats in The Hague, but that's not our capital.

It is in fact quite practical to not have the government seating in the capital city. It spreads traffic and crowd concentration.

Hope this helps

Our capital city is Amsterdam, Den haag is where our government is. That doesn't make it the capital city.

Amsterdam is the capital.

Den Haag is however the seat of government but it is not actually the capital (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague)

The Dutch constitution set it up like this, it's their rules they can do what they want with them, however strange it is to outsiders.

Amsterdam is certainly the "primate city", that is the culturally most important, the one where everythings going on etc. But technically i would say the hague is where government is and is thus the capital.
