Trust me, I WANT to go to college. I want to get an education and the thought of not going has never crossed my mind.

Anyway, to be an author or a writer, do you go to college? Are there actual classes for that? I am pretty sure you need to for journalism, but I mean an actual author. If so, what would be the best college for writers?

Read, read, read. Write, write, write. Yes, there are colleges with Creative Writing Programs. I used to work for a college that has a Master's Degree in Writing ... A Master's of Fine Arts in Writing, to be exact.

Workshops on writing are all around (well, you have to look).

Scholarships and/or grants are readily available (you need to search them out and apply, of course ... with no guarantees, unfortunately) for writing. AROHO Foundation (you can google and view their website) is one example.

Books written by writers are available on writing: Check out Natalie Goldberg, Anne Lamott ... Deena Metzger, Nancy Mairs ...

If this is your dream, dream big and do lots of footwork (you get out of your passion what you invest) and best of everything!!! Oh, and keep writing!!!

Yes, there are classes in college for writing and masters programs in writing too. But the essential feature of successful writers is that they have fresh ideas and a command of the language, which isn't guaranteed by a college education. Being in classes with other aspiring writers and an inspirational teacher can help if you're serious. You can also study on your own by reading and seeing what great writers do. There are books about writing that are quite helpful, such as those published by Writer's Digest Books.

Absolutely! In order be a writer, you need a solid command of the rules of writing, including: spelling, grammar, and styles.

English and Journalism are the most popular majors for those going into the field of writing. The difference between these two is essentially the form of writing you want to do. If you want to go into broadcasting (anchor, etc.), then journalism is the preferred route. Otherwise, English.

My personal preference would be to get the degree in English, and perhaps add some journalism classes to it.
