I have a journalism background but the jobs are just not there. I'm a writer and have been published in newspapers and magazines. I assume there are more opportunities out there for advertising or marketing. Any good ides on how to transition?

"Get into advertising" is a broad statement. Based on reading your background, I assume that you're looking for a position in advertising that will enable you to utilize your writing experience in some way? If that is the case, you could work for an advertising agency, a company's in-house marketing department, or a media/publishing company that sells advertising.
Do you want to be on the sales side? Good writing skills can go a long way towards success in sales ... a successful career in ad sales can be lucrative.
Re: how to transition: First, read read read. Choose the direction that you think you want to go within advertising. Try and find people that work in the advertising business and pick their brains. Let's say you land a job that's a match with your search. You'll either like it, or not like it, but you will at least gain visibility into the advertising industry and learn of other positions within advertising that you think you'd like.

I've been in publishing for decades. There are opportunities in advertising. Just apply and send in your published articles even though they are not technically advertisements. Being a good writer will put you ahead of most other applicants.

Advertising has these people chasing cars and clothes they don't need. Generations have been working in jobs they hate, just so they can buy what they don't really need
