Similarities: Both eyes can give the user an incredible insight or an understanding of details around them..for example, if they are fighting an enemy and the enemy uses a ninjutsu, both the byakkugan and sharingan can tell how that ninjutsu works or...when the user is in a surrounding full of traps, the user can easily know the hidden traps...---in Layman's term---both the eyes can help the user analyze the surrounding more quickly than an ordinary person---these eyes can even decipher patterns or codes easily..
=========
Difference:

Byakkugan can see through anything like an X-ray vision...it can even see through the chakra circulatory system..
It can see through any object, translucent or opaque, making the object transparent..or crystal clear... To add to that, the user has a spherical vision....that can see through any direction except at one point behind the user's first vertebrae....

Sharingan can not only understand a jutsu very easily or read the movements of a person...it can also copy a jutsu, hypnotize a person, or counter ginjutsus...but it cannot be used once there is something blocking it (unlike the byakkugan which can see even if there's something blocking its vision)..

However, the advance sharingan called Mangekyou Sharingan can do jutsus like AMaterasu which is a black flame that can burn anything..and Tsukuyomi, a psychological attack, not just an ordinary ginjutsu, which can take the person of whom it is used in a surreal world and make him experience extreme pain or torture depending on how the user wants it... the user of a tsukuyomi can alter anything in that world even space, time, and masses...
==========

Which is the better?

A byakkugan can be better against a sharingan with one tomoe (that circular symbol in the eyes of sharigan users)...

However, once the sharingan user can activate the sharingan with two tomoes, he can easily use a hypnotic jutsu and a counter ginjutsu....making the sharigan better than the byakkugan..

However again, if the sharigan user activates the three-tomoed sharingan then the user can easily copy any jutsu, read movements, hypnotize, do powerful ginjutsu, do counter ginjutsu with ease...giving the sharingan a wide advantage against the byakkugan eventhough an advance byakkugan user has his Kaiten and all the advance offensive strikes...

Also, a three-tomoed sharigan user can easily acces the mangekyou sharigan once he have killed his most closest friend...

BOTTOMLINE: SHARINGAN IS BETTER...but that doesn't mean that the byakkugan is no match.

Well that's a hard one, as sharingan you can copy an opponent's jutsu down pat and use it against them, and the more you copy, the more knowlegde of jutsu you have. Plus, there are three stages in the sharingan that one has to achieve, so i guess that's like have three advantages. The byakugan you can sense pretty much everything that has chakra that's around you, and you can see through an opponent's body and mind to find their weak spots, making them easier to defeat the enemy/opponent faster. The sharingan was actually thought to have derived from the byakugan, since they're both kekkeigenkai in the eyes, but i personally think that sharingan is better cause the Uchiha clan only has it!!! And the Hyuuga clan it good too, but with all the main branches and side branches of the family and conflicts like that, i don't think i like the hyuuga clan that much. But there's more to both sharingan and byakugan, but that's all i know. yes, i'd definitely take the sharingan!! (it looks cooler too!)

I'd say Sharingan because used in the right hands (like kakashi) it can become an all round attack, using mind attacks and bending people's will to the extent that he can make them do what seal he wishes, before doing the same and causing the attacker to think he can see into the future. Very useful.
Although, this is a tough one! I also like Byakugan because (in the case of Hinata and Neji) you can see the chakra points and cause intense damaga....and you can also have almost 360 degree vision....
hmmmm, i'm undecided but it all depends on who has the certain skill.

I would say Sharingan is better than Byakuyan because a professional sharingan user can use genjutsu which is illusion, look at Uchiha Itachi, he is a genius and talented sharingan user, he can use genjutsu whenever he can. Itachi can trap someone with his sharingan in genjutsu and torture them there inside their own illusion which might also kill them without having to fight them with fists. Besides this, sharingan can also copy others' ninjutsu by just looking at them that's why Orochimaru wanted Sasuke.

Byakuyan is also another noble clan in Konoha but they can't copy other people's jutsu by looking at them. They can detect their vein though and hit them with a single touch which might bring death to their opponent. Byakuyan can also concentrate chakra with their hand and cut through any web produced by spiders
