Unless your room is pitch black, the fish can do well on just the light from the room. In nature, they're not all lit up and they do just fine! If you're having an algae problem, the best solution is to only have the light on when you are there to enjoy the tank, for example in the evening. Adding an algae eater might seem like a good idea, but no algae eater is small enough to be happy in a 12 gallon tank and they only add to the bioload - increasing your chances of having algae.

Fish don't like bright lights. It isn't good for their eyes. The lights are for us humans. I would say, especially since you don't have live plants and algae is growing because of the lights, leave the lights off during the day and only turn them on in the evening for a few hours.

Since you do not have live plants there is actually no need for your tank to be lighted (unless you are trying to breed them, but that wasn't your ?). Your fish will thrive with no light at all, they will be more docile and less prone to stress. Only turn the light on when you want to view your pets.
But 2 to 3 hours a day will not hurt them.
And always have the light off when introducing a new fish to the community.

Typically I have the lights on 8-12 hours a day. I find it easiest to put the light on a timer so that it automatically turns on and off. I like to have the light on when I'm home and have it shut off during the day when no one is home.

Have the gentle on even as that's daylight hours and characteristic it off even as that's evening time. then you honestly could have a healthful schedualed time to teach on your fish tank gentle and to teach it off. it truly is critical that you've your fish tank gentle on for a good era of time, because it truly is an same as you being put in a gloomy room for a lengthy time period. you receives sick loose dermis color and larger importantly health. the gentle helps deliver the colourful hues out of the fish and makes them more suitable lively and tasty.

if you have them in a sunny room you don't need it on at all. it just looks nicer with the light on. but all the crud that grows in the tank is not worth the pretty the light provides.
