Shenandoah -- It's set during the civil war. His son gets 'shanghaied' into the CSA and he goes looking for him. There are a lot of sad moments, but he also has some very funny and touching moments too. Like when he fixes up a bedroom in a rickety old shack so his daughter can finally have her long delayed wedding night? And when Boy finally comes home at the end of the movie, I cry like a baby.

Awww, do I have to pick just one? Check out his IMDB page if you are looking for a list of all of his movies (useful if you are a collector) . I really enjoyed "The Cheyenne Social Club" (the one where he inherits a... ahem... brothel). He and Henry Fonda just played off of each other so well.
P.S. Sergeant York was actually a Cary Cooper movie.

"Sergeant York", because it's the life story of one of America's heroes. It's in black and white, but the message still stands true today. That you could solve problems without violence.
