We have a tracphone for when my husband works in remote areas out of state. They seem to work anywhere but the best one I have found without a contract is the "Go Phone " from cingular. You can get them from wal-mart and it only costs a dollar a day if you use it, if you don't then there is no charge and they have free mobile to mobile with anyone who has cingular.

I used to but I upgraded to verizon :-) They are a wonderful "budjet" phone company but I would only use it in emergencies as the airtime is outrageous, but the reception is great but if you do get one I recommend the Nokia 2126 model because it has national coverage. (I know this b/c this is the model I had) Any of tracfone's phones that do have sim cards have limited coverage so be sure to ask the sales associate in the electronics dept. if it is a CDMA Phone b/c this is the one you will need for national coverage. Overall I was really pleased with their service I had them for about 1 year and after that I upgraded 2 verizon's prepaid plan for $30/mo + 0.10 per minute during the day to non verizon customers and free nights incl. No Cred check no contract! that was my biggie I am a teenager and dont want to commit two years to a phone company I hardly know. BUT tracfone can cost you a minimum of $20 every 60 days b/c you have to add a card every 60 days and the lowest card is $20 and gives you 60 mins. Some people complain about having bad reception on tracfone is because tracfone has 2 different phone technologies one is GSM and the other is CDMA GSM is Limited and CDMA is nationwide and when you go to buy a phone it should say on the back CDMA or SIM for gsm.
Hope this helps you!

A year ago I got Tracfone and I really loved it - the signal and customer service were great.
The past six months, however, things have turned for the worst - I've been having problem connecting to the network with the following error messages (Searching ..... Please Wait) or (Roaming, when I am in the coverage area). When this happened, I am usually unable to make call on my phone until I call customer service.
If I don't get cut-off, customer service takes 30 to 40 minutes to get to my call, and if they do get to me, the person to whom I am speaking, does not have a clue on the subject matter at hand and usually has to call the "supervisor". I have done this every two weeks for the past six months now. My service have expired and I am not planning to renew it. So in my over all experience, as of late, Tracfone is bad. (Try "go phone" from cingular) Just a suggestion!

I have one and it is a Motorola with Verizon service. I live up in the mountains 15 miles out of town and it works good. I sometimes have to step onto the front porch to get a signal, but its for emergency's. I use it we I go out of town and have no complaints. The only thing is sometimes I have a problem adding minutes through there website, but I think that it is just me.

Ok tracfone is good for the phones and plans but the reception is a lil ify depending on where you are. As for me when I used one in the mountains near my home mine beeped searching for reception and some places I had none. All I can say is try it and good luck.
P.S. Please make sure you find out when your phone gets discontinued.

The reception is pretty good - it gets a strong signal even when my Cingular phone has no reception.

i guess it depends where you are and what phone you use like regular cell phone service, but many of my family members have them and really get good reception where many normal cell phones dont get it for some reason...good luck
