It's slang for "a little", as in, "Move over a skosh."

The Japanese word for "little" is "sukoshi", pronounced "skosh". After the American occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1952, the word "skosh" found it's way into the American vernacular.

I don't know the origin, but I grew up using the word "skosh" meaning 'a little bit.' (I'm 73 and have used it since highschool)
Example - I'll be there in a skosh-(in a minute) or similar.
So, maybe th crossword word is 'bit??'

A small amount of something.

From the Japanese word "sukoshi," pronounced skosh. That also means a little bit.

"I'll have just a skosh of that pie..."
