I love The Monkees! The Monkees (Michael Nesmith, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork), formed in 1965 for a TV show, the show ran from 66-68. The Monkees disbanded in 1970, but have had many reunions; they last worked together in 2001.

Auditions for "The Monkees" TV Show were held in 1965. Individual members of the group began recording vocals for various backing tracks in 1966, and the band started playing their own instruments on 1967's "Headquarters". Peter Tork left the project in 1968 after the movie "Head", and Michael Nesmith departed after the "Present" album in 1969. Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones recorded one final album together called "Changes" in 1970 before the entire project was retired.

The band has reunited various times since then, most notably in 1986 and 1996, but the classic years for The Monkees took place during 1966-1970.
