try to be understanding, and reassure her that you do not want to take her son away from her, but that you would love to become a member of their family, as well. She could be feeling like things are changing and she has lost control of her family (her life) especially if this is the first one to get married, or if he is an only child. She could also be entering menopause,
and that is a real and true consideration. In any case I think if you assure her, that you want her to be a part of the wedding plans, and a part of your lives as well, and then SHOW her that this is true, she will come around, and possibly even be friendly towards you.
Kill 'em with kindness....it's a good motto.

Women who are about to have some girl "take her son away from her" often are not on their very best behavior. If you love your fiance and intend to have a marriage that works, you'd better get along with the members of his family. Once you've proven yourself as a decent person who is not going to contaminate her son, she may lighten up. However, if her ego is that big, she may be too busy loving herself to bother you all that much once the wedding is over. Then of course when the babies come along, she'll act like they're the cutest, smartest, best kids on earth and spend her time with them. Never ever ever say anything bad about her to your fiance. That's a kiss of death no matter how true it may be!

Hey you found mommy in law. I found the way to handle mother dearest was to avoid her. My wife had to choose between her family (me) and Satan's spawn. The strange thing is after years of marriage I grew up and saw my stupidity had cause her years without regular contact. So I did what any person living with the guilt would do...I am now a kiss *** man for mommy in law.

i dont know but from personal experience you will end up screaming at her because you are so tense. mention the smaller problems to your bf/gf and ask what their opinion on it. things like, "your mum said blah blah to me today and i wasnt impressed, what do you think i could say to her etc" i would say something though to either your partner, or very politely to her. Good Luck this situation sux

Smile, kiss up, and never, ever criticize her to your husband. Even if it makes you nauseous to be sweet, do it. Complement her. Ask her about her -- that's whose number one in her book. Pretend that you are her biggest fan. Keep visits short, friendly and infrequent.

say nice things about your husband to her so she thinks she is a good mother... that will keep her at bay until you have kids, that will either make her happy or make things worse.
