$3,000
The overwhelming component of the cost of new phones is NOT the upfront hardware cost, but the long-term cost of the service contract that accompanies the phone. Cell phone service providers regularly give away phones for next to nothing, to secure a two-year commitment to a service contract of high cost (and uncertain future quality). The companies think in terms of the long-term revenue of the contract; they count on the fact that customers are usually so focused on the upfront cost that they don't estimate the long-term cost. Several states are considering legislation that would restrict this practice (for example, by allowing customers to switch providers while paying only a pro-rated fraction of whatever subsidy they were given on the initial phone), but this legislation is aggressively opposed by the cell-phone companies and their (generally Republican) allies in Congress and state legislatures, to whom they make large campaign contributions.
So, what is the real, two-year cost of owning and using an iPhone? We don't know, because neither Apple nor Cingular has made any statement about what the largest component of the cost (the service contract) will be. Apple says only that iPhone will cost $499-599 WITH 2-YEAR CONTRACT.
Cingular currently charges $60/month for a voice plan with 900 minutes, and $35/month for a 20MB data package. It's possible that they will offer these same rates to iPhone users, though it also seems possible that Cingular, given the business opportunity of being the monopolist service provider (without competition) of iPhone voice and data services, will be able to charge more than that (possibly citing the cost of providing the enhanced data services that the phone enables).
So a conservative estimate is that, including taxes and fees, the two-year cost of having and using iPhone is more than $3,000, though the real cost (once announced by Cingular) could turn out to be considerably higher.

Early reports indicate the retail price will be between 499 and $599. Of course, that is sure to be discounted heavily eventually by retailers and chain stores, and on-line merchants. Cingular will have the market initially, and they will set the price; however, there are sure to be deals.
Here is a report from CNNmoney.com :
" SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney.com) -- Consumers will finally get the chance to own an iPhone, a mobile phone that plays iTunes and surfs the Web, electronics maker Apple said Tuesday. The device will retail for between $499 and $599."
