why don't you get a Styrofoam sphere and cut it in half and color it then use that as the cell membrane itself , and find little craft things to be the other parts /

Have you ever had Jello Jigglers? you can make some really thin sheets of this, just make the mix and place some on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper and let it dry. It's like rubber if you do it right. and it's semi opaque and all kinds of good stuff.

For the membrane you can use jello. It worked perfectly for me. Good luck!
