Wow!.. I can't believe that nobody suggested just a regular ol' fertilizer. Do Sports stadiums use manure and organic fertilizers? Do championship golf courses use manure? I should say not... With spring around the corner you will want to feed your lawn with a somewhat balanced fertilizer.. A time released sulfur coated would be best.. Miracle grow makes a very good sulfur coated granular lawn fert as well as any of the Scott's turf builder mixes... You will want a nitrogen content of at least 26% - 32% for the best green up. Phosphorous and Potash will be considerably lower, at around 3% - 6%. The sulfur coated will only release the nutrients when the lawn is watered, so won't burn the lawn like non sulfur coated ferts will, and they continue to fertilize for up to 4 - 6 weeks.. You will want to fertilize one more time before the heat of summer sets in, usually by the end of June. In the fall, at the end of Sept. and beginning of Oct. you will want to put on a fertilizer that has alot less nitrogen. Usually around 16% is sufficient.. This will give the lawn time to store up an added supply of food for the winter, and utilize it when the next growing season begins in spring.. If you can get a 16-16-16 formula, this will do the trick.. In the fall, you don't want to encourage too much growth with the lawn trying to shut down for the winter after the first good couple of frosts of the year... Hope this info helps you out.

#1. Where are you located? What type of grass do you have? A regular program, insecticide and fertilizer is a must. Here in South Texas we start early, with a balanced high nitrogen sulfur coated fertilizer. Be sure and keep in mind that with additional rain in some areas, good old corn meal from the feed store takes care of fungus. Dry Brown Spots could mean disease or insects. Always consult a professional.

The absolute best fertilizer for almost anything is compost. Manure stinks but when it is composted it smells like good dirt! It retains water so you don't have to water so often and acts as a slow release fertilizer. It's how nature has been fertilizing for earth's history.

Manure is a poor source of fertilizer and can burn if not put down correctly. It also depends on where you live. If you live in an area that naturally has high potassium you want a higher nitrogen fertilizer. like 18-0-0.

Anything that is NOT synthetic. Personally, I would go with chicken or steer manure, or better yet, fish emulsion mixed with some seakelp concentrate, 2 tbsp of each mixed very very well with water and get a sprayer and spray it over your lawn. That is your absolute best bet.

The best is probably what your neighbors wouldn't want to have to put up with.... plain old manure. It's got to be from plant-eating animals, though. Human, dog, and cat feces actually kill off plant life. Farmers use liquid manure, and you probably wouldn't want a description of it here! But suffice to say, it's about the best fertilizer, and one of the cheapest. It's also one of the stinkiest!

In spring use a high nitrogen based fertiliser to encourage blade growth and colour such as Urea.
At the end of summer use a high potassium fertiliser to encourage good root growth.
