That song was about the plane that went down with the Big Bopper, Richie Valens and Buddy Holly. A bunch of people met at the dry levy because they were wanting to see the remains of the plane. It was a sad day. "The day that music died". Hence, "this'll be the day that I die... " Ms. American Pie was a reference to the plane they were on, but the plane actually had no name, just numbers.
Waylon Jennings flipped a coin with Ritchie Valens for the last available seat.

i don't think they ever say that they knew beforehand that the levy was dry. the song, "american pie" is about the loss of buddy holly who died in a place crash, so the lyrics all have symbolic meanings about loss. to own a chevy back in the day was a symbol of american heritance. but the image of driving to a dry levee brings up a feeling of loss and how times has changed some good things of the past.

but this is all speculation as the original singer, don mclean, has never ever publicly interpreted his lyrics and chooses to not do so. but it's still one heck of a chorus huh?

You see, they needed a good place to drink their whisky and rye. And what better place than a dry levee? No one else would be there, so it was a good place for some underaged hippies to drink without getting caught!
