Well for starters, spray your yard and remove any stagnant water. Then, wear long sleeves, jeans or OFF bug repellant. But spraying and getting rid of the water are your best bets of getting rid of them.

Run pretty darned fast! -Actually, there's not much of a foolproof way to eliminate them completely, other than moving to a desert area. But there's things you can do to cut down on having too many of them. Most importantly, Make sure there's no standing water on your property for them to breed in. This includes often overlooked things like an old bucket out back, that happens to have a few inches of old rainwater in it, or a tire laying outside somewhere (tires are notorious mosquito breeding-grounds!). Even clumps of damp leaves can be a breeding-place for them, but undisturbed water's their favorite. Clogged rain gutters are another favorite of theirs, as there's going to be some water sitting there. Animal water-tanks should be changed or have fresh water running into them constantly, as well. I've seen horses refuse to drink their water, and on examination, it's found the trough is crawling with mosquito larvae!
Then there's personal protection. Unless you have an allergy to it, the best repellent has a strong concentration of deet. Some people swear by citronella, but I've personally watched mosquitos happily land on the leaves of a citronella plant! So there's controversy over whether that actually works or not. If you're considering one of those electronic repellers, I'd say save your money. They don't work either, in my book. The zapper, a light bulb surrounded with electric wires, that attracts and kills bugs, will work, but usually won't eliminate all of them. If you want to have an evening backyard party, try putting some lights way out on the perimeter of your yard, rather than close to where you are. The lights will draw a majority of them over to that area, giving you a bit more relief from bugs of all sorts.

dont use deet.. if you do, you might as well drink kerosene.. eating garlic and onions help.. there are plants that repel them, most in the mint family.. to repel them while camping or at a picnic you can place open stick of any spearmint type gum around camp or around the food.. or even wrap (a dry piece) around your belt loop(s).. they dont like smokey wet fires.. dont wear perfumes or colones.. or white clothes.. and in an emergency, if you were stuck in the jungle, you could smear mud all over your body to protect from biting (elephants do this).. if all else fails, swat them with your tail...

Dump standing water: That's where they breed. And I've heard that vinegar is a good repellant.
Good luck!
