The NBA slam dunk contest was started when Doc was older than 30. He lost the first Slam dunk contest to a 6-10 power foward who dunked 2 balls after Doc had missed an attempt. Doc was a great game time dunker. Two dunks that really stand out were in the same series against the Lakers one in which he dunked over defensive standout Mike Cooper. The second in which he did an up and under dunk while having to duck his head under the backboard to avoind hitting it.

My friend the Dunk contest originated in the ABA and Julius Erving was the Master. When he arrived in the NBA the Dunk Contest came with him. Oh yeah you ought to check your facts. The current format of the Dunk Contest takes place during All-Star Weekend which began in 1984, however there were NBA dunk contests that ran during the regular season through a bracket type arrangement prior to 1984 and were not placed into the NBA record. They were half-time entertainment for NBCs weekly NBA showcased games. The Dr did win, however once David "Skywalker" Thompson dethroned Erving due to a missed attempt did he turn the reins over. Back then you only got 3 dunks PERIOD! If you missed a dunk you essentially were eliminated. All the Dunks you witness today are rehashed from Dominique " The Human highlight Reel" Wilkens, David "Sky walker" Thompson, & YES Julius "Dr. J" Erving. Even Michael Jordans most ballyhooed dunks were repeats of Dr. J's performances.

Size was a factor "Dr. J" was A 6-7, 210-pound small forward, not 6-10 or better like most dunk contest winners. Of course with the exception of the "SPUD" WOW!! what a vertical, and light and strong enough to pull it off.

Vertical leaps are what make dunks (factors of height and weight and reach)

In his five ABA seasons, Erving won three scoring titles, three Most Valuable Player Awards and two league championships. During his 11-year NBA career Erving was an All-Star each season, the league's Most Valuable Player in 1981 and a five-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He scored 30,026 points in his combined ABA and NBA career;

only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Karl Malone and (high flying) Michael Jordan have scored more points in the history of professional basketball. I would consider these facts slam dunk titles in themselves. But I get it!! and I hear you!! He did everything else why not that. I amazed as well.

One earlier response is incorrect in that the NBA dunk contest began while Dr. J was still playing, and at a minimum he participated in the first dunk contest. Another earlier response is incorrect in that Dr. J never did win an NBA dunk contest.

In the first dunk contest, the Doc was the favorite going in. But he missed a dunk late in the contest, which pretty much ruined his chances. He scored a perfect score on his famed free throw line dunk, but by then he was far enough behind Larry Nance (the eventual winner) that even the perfect score wasn't enough to catch up.

I don't recall if he participated in the second dunk contest, but that one was won by Dominique Wilkins, who was no slouch in the dunking department in his own right. Even if Dr. J did participate in that one, he might well have not been favored over Nique.

Dunk contests weren't around during Dr. J's time. He's still in the top 5 dunkers of all time, though.
