Personally, this question is impossible to answer. I was never considered cool as a kid.
Now that I'm a one-time college grad (soon to be second) with money and have reasonably good looks, there are rumors that a fan club is developing.
(Okay, maybe not a fan club. But I'm definitely more popular now than I ever was as a kid.)

I would put a gigantic comb and a thick Dr. Pepper lipgloss in my back pocket when I went to Skateland, and put pink glowsticks on the bottom of my skates. All the cool girls did that in the early 80's......and so did I. Lol!

I didn't. I was a huge geek in high school. Chess club, captain of the debate team, honors roll, valedictorian, the whole shebang. Did not date or go to dances, although that might have been because I'm gay and didn't want to be killed with sticks.

I remeber back in the late 80's early 90's we used to roll up the bottom of our pants and wear layered colored socks about the more socks you had on the better!! Looking back now omg we looked like such dorks!

Oh, man, you get two pairs of scrunchy socks, and put them on with the colors alternating! AWESOME!!!!!
It was the 90s. I was young and stupid.
Now, I only wear one pair of socks at a time (unless it's cold or I'm hiking) and times are better.

Painted on my face and body, created new clothes out of old ones. That was when I was young enough to count my age in the single digits. ;)
