"Solve for s" means to get s all by itself on one side of the equals sign. Right now the equation is solved for D.

D = C - s/n

So first step, add s/n to both sides of the equation.

s/n + D = C

Then subtract D from both sides.

s/n = C - D

Finally, multiply both sides by n:

s = n(C-D)

I am not sure what you mean about depreciation, but the formula is "solved for s" above.

First: eliminate the fraction > multiply the denominator by everything ...

D(n) = n(C) - n(s/n)

Sec: cancel "like" terms and combine the remaining terms...

Dn = Cn - s

Third: solve for "s" by subtracting Cn from both sides (opposite side means opposite sign)...

Dn - Cn = Cn - Cn - s
Dn - Cn = -s

-s = Dn - Cn

*Make sure the coefficient "s" is positive > change all the signs in the equation...

s = -Dn + Cn

Or, s = -n(D - C) but, in this problem, there's no need to factor and solve for any variable.

Add s/n to both sides:
D+s/n=C

Subtract D from both sides:
s/n=C-D

Multiply n from both sides:
s=n(C-D)
