Yes music help the brain function better Music to me is the language of the soul because the soul understand music more than our body.
Doe we may dance and node our head in the course of listening to music but it is our soul that is responding.

Studies indicate that music training generates the neural connections used for abstract reasoning, including those necessary for understanding mathematical concepts. Specifically, earlier studies led by Drs. Rauscher and Shaw reported a causal relationship between music training and spatial-temporal ability enhancement in preschoolers (1994), and among college students who simply listened to a Mozart sonata.

Depends on the person's brain and what the brain is working on. Helps with homework, but not with class tests, where intense concentration is needed.

I think it depends on what activities you are asking your brain to perform. Personally speaking, I find music helpful when I am performing creative tasks, like drawing or painting, but if I am doing something like reading a book, or writing, then I find music very distracting. So I think it depends very much on what you do when listening to music. I don't think it helps when trying to retain information, but it does when expressing yourself.

Officially. I do not know. For me, it works. However, there are tests that have shown that babies who listen to Classical music tend to be smarter when they grow up.
