u should try both! and see what u like. if u try one u might not like it much. try both so u can see what is more comfortable for u. u will become a better rider if u can ride english or western. one is not better than the other. english and bareback will give u better balance and there are many things that are fun to learn with english like jumping(one example). western is more relaxed most of the time and there are fun things like barrels and other speed events that u can learn. just cause some people say one is better than the other doesnt mean its true. u should take a couple lessons in both and decide which is right for u.

The saddle you use will depend on where you take lessons and what kind of riding style the instructor teaches. If you want to learn english, I'd start out hunt seat. It's more difficult than western, but in my opinion you will establish a better seat. It is also exciting to learn to jump. Once you've learned the basics of hunt seat, you could move onto dressage or stadium jumping. I wouldn't start in dressage (even though it's my favorite) because until you understand the physics of riding you won't be able to appreciate it and may become bored. It's also easier to switch from english to western than to convert from western to english.
Riding horses is fun no matter what your discipline. You may want to take some english lessons, then maybe try some western.

Definately try both. I am a big fan of either. I like western on trail rides and training young horses and like english for jumping and going to learn Dressage when my Priesian is old enough to ride. If you havn't tried either then go to a local stables and take trail rides, most will let you try English if you ask them. Also make sure you know where you want to go with it. Riding western is very uncomfortable if you are going to jump for example.

First off it is a matter of preference. Western is a more relaxed, trail riding enjoying your horse with nature. English (proper) is more ridged and pronounced.
Enjoy your horse and riding him. Start out western. If you feel you need the Diciplines of english, go for it. Being a riding teacher for many years I would make you start out bare back. No lie. LEARN to use your body and legs first. If you are having a serious problem "holding on" you may wish to go western since the saddle offers more for "rougher" riding. Let's face it the county fairs don't have english saddles on their pony rides.
P.S. Think of how much more fun the wild west was. I just couldn't see Jessie James riding an english saddle.

when learning to ride you should start out in western that is because you have a horn to hold on too and more of a seat and your legs are more natural to a sitting position when you are comfortable on a horse then you can try English it is nice to know both styles of riding because both have lots to offer and then you can chose your favorite try not to get discouraged if things are not going right riding takes alot of practice but eventually it will come to you

Dressage - in my opinion it is my known English driving self-discipline. the tiers variety from "Prep" that's purely walk and trot to "Grand Prix" point, which comprises walk, trot, canter and an excellent sort of diverse strikes and suggestions. In dressage elevation of the pony and rider mutually is amazingly significant, attractiveness and flexibility of the pony is significant. Dressage is like ballet for horses, that's a quiet and intensely calm self-discipline. leaping - showjumping additionally has multiple diverse stages and diverse heights to bounce. Horses must be forward shifting and intensely energetic. that's particularly a speedy and hyperactive activity and may well be confusing. persistence - persistence driving is overlaying long distances over an excellent sort of diverse terrain in any respect gaits, horses must be properly fed, healthful and somewhat in positive condition to try this activity. Many persistence rides are camped at additionally and it normally final an entire weekend or few days. exhilaration driving - exhilaration driving is normally purely path driving for exciting, you could relatively do in spite of you choose, you additionally could make he horse as in positive condition as you choose. Western driving.. i do no longer understand plenty approximately western driving, I surely have ridden English my total existence and understand little or no with regard to the western stuff. maximum western horses are greater efficient broken in than English horses, they are oftentimes working horses and don't teach attitude in direction of human beings, they are worked confusing and are VERY in positive condition. .

If you are taking lessons and don't own your own horse, they usually provide the saddle at the stable.
If you are new to this try a local tack shop , look at their bulletin board and you can usually find a second hand one at a reasonable price.
