It depends on how "most important" is defined. Do you mean in the world, in the US, living, modern, classical, of all time, in English, in any language, any category of writing, etc?
My candidate for most important of all time in any language is the English playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616).

Jane Austen, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Dickens, Sylvia Plath, JD Salinger, Shakespeare, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, F Scott Fitzgerald, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle...those who wrote the classics are the most important to me. These are only authors I've read, so I can't name others because I have no way to judge them. I know there are many others, but here are a few.
