i have a 1994 GMC suburban diesel K2600, 6.5L Turbocharged Diesel V8 OHV 16V FI Engine.

for the past several years, it occasionaly will not start on the first key turn (after the warm up).

if i immediatly turn the key again (no waiting) it will start and the "start" will sound normal.

abouth a year ago, i discovered that sometimes i would have to turn the key several times very quickly to get it to start.

it has never "not started."

I know that if it ain't broke don't fix it, but should i have it checked out. i dread being out somewhere with a car that won't start.

It could be either cruddy contacts in the ignition switch or a sticky solenoid. The solenoid is cheapest and easiest to replace, so you might try that first. The only way to tell for sure is to catch it not starting while somebody is holding a voltmeter on the ignition switch wire on the solenoid.
You could check the wire to the solenoid first. If it's loose or corroded it would be intermittent.

It clearly is getting worse, and it is getting older and more used. Certainly you should be concerned. Sooner or later it is going to fail altogether, and like Murphy's Law, at the most inopportune time.
The issue is likely either the ignition switch or the starter.
It it not that big a deal, but it is the one thing necessary to drive your vehicle. If it doesn't start, even if it is brand new and won't start it isn't of any more value to you than a dead horse.
Shouldn't be much more than $250.00 or so.

Happy Motoring
