I took my car to my mechanic today and he said that my purge control solenoid is bad because its getting way too hot and not working correctly, which is causing lower mpg now.

I have a 1995 Honda Accord if that helps.

So what the fock is purge control solenoid?

An electronic valve of sorts that measures and adjusts the fuel vapor pressure feed based on the driving condition of the engine.

It can malfunction when over heated and results in fuel inefficiency as well as other fuel related issues. The over heating is generally a condition of age. Replace it.

A fuel vapor canister is purged by admitting fuel vapor from the canister to the vehicle engine under control of a solenoid valve, the duty cycle of the valve being controlled to optimize the purge rate. Closed loop fuel correction and block learn fuel correction factors developed by the fuel control system are used to update a learned purge duty cycle which is stored in a keep-alive memory.

A purge control solenoid ,when activated ,allows gases from the charcoal canister to purge into the intake manifold. This helps to take vapor from the gas tank that would normally escape into the atmosphere.

There is exhaust emissions and there are evaporative emissions fumes that in the past would be vented into the air are trapped in activated charcoal when the charcoal becomes saturated the purge valve opens up to allow the engine to burn the fuel vapors. The purge valve will get hot to touch on lots of cars but that is not an indication that the valve is actually bad. other fuel vent codes stored in the computer would direct me to change that part unless it does not pass the blow thru test.

This solenoid opens a valve that sucks the fuel vapors that have accumulated in your charcoal canister back through the intake to be burned up. (It's an emissions reducing function.)

In many states this will prevent you from passing inspection for emissions. Not really convinced those few vapors that could be burned would contribute greatly to mpg.
