Psychopharmacology is the study, prescription and appropriate use of drugs for psychiatric illness and for neuropsychiatric conditions. Psychopharmacology is not an official medical specialty in that there is no current specialist board.
Psychopharmacologists:
• may or may not be physicians
• are experts in the pharmacology of the brain
• if physicians, prescribe for patients
• often are trained in techniques of biological psychiatry
• have special expertise in brain medications over and above that in psychiatric and neurological training
